Admire the thousand-year-old Chachapoyas sarcophagus
For this tour, you will be picked up from your hotel in Chachapoyas. The tour takes you to the Leimebamba Museum and the Revash Mausoleums, which will give you a deeper understanding of the Chachapoyas culture. There are two ways to visit the Revash Mausoleums: a 2-hour hike along the cliffs or a horseback ride along the same route. Along the way, you will see several mausoleums built by the Chachapoyas and positioned on the ledges of the Revash cliff. From a distance, they may look like small houses forming tiny villages, but up close, you can see that they are sarcophagi carefully built into the cliffs. There are still many mysteries surrounding the Chachapoyas, such as why they placed what appear to be the city’s most influential people so high up and what the symbols painted above them mean.
After the hike, you’ll descend for 1.5 hours to the vehicle to continue on toward Leimebamba. The town’s museum houses 219 mummies and an archaeological collection from the Chachapoyas culture—a branch of the Inca culture—that was recovered from Lake Condor in 1997. Here you will learn everything about its use by the Chachapoyas and subsequent Inca cultures, including the fact that the Incas also used Lake Condor as a burial site. The museum’s garden is remarkable for its beauty, featuring around a hundred species of orchids.
Lunch will be served at a nearby restaurant before you return to your hotel. This activity is not suitable for people with limited mobility.
At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel in Leimebamba.
